The Sex of Success

Human beings are historically mixed-up, embarrassed, ignorant, and hypocritical about sexuality. So many people have noted, for example, on national network television that we will show much more graphic violence than we will graphic sex, although the boundaries are continually more and more blurred. The taboos, customs, and traditions surrounding sexual matters have evolved and changed drastically from culture to culture and millennia to millennia. What was against the rules at one time is no longer.
As a teen in the 1970’s I recall a friendship I made with an LDS boy named Rick, who was a few years older than I. His religion is mentioned because it was relevant to his character and sense of self. One day Rick and I took a drive to a mountainside State park that I had visited before, and we enjoyed a fun afternoon hiking around. Some months later, Rick returned to that site, fed a garden hose from the exhaust pipe of his car back in through the window, and committed suicide. I later learned that Rick was struggling with homosexuality issues, much to my surprise. Although I have never had a homosexual orientation and could not therefore fully comprehend his trappings, I knew Rick well enough to know that he was both sensitive and intelligent. His death shocked, disturbed, and profoundly saddened me. I liked Rick tremendously and enjoyed our friendship. Although Rick is an extreme example, his life and death affected my thinking with regard to human sexuality and lifelong success.
Being at peace with our sexual person is an important component of success; anything less can end careers, cause profound damage, and can undoubtedly obstruct our overall quality of life. The subject is private for most of us, and yet the evidence is eventually displayed publicly, even in our open unions. Regardless of preference, it is vital to be emotionally content in this arena.
Success is in the eye of the beholder, as is sexual orientation or preference. The sex of success is completely within our control, and must be under our control for success to be sustained
